". . . a brush with nature"
Making Us Better

In a recent issue of “Inside Art - Inspiration for Artists” (an article by Kelly Kane), I read that “Art makes us feel better.” This was a wonderful article, as they most often are, but this certainly wasn’t new news to me personally. Art makes me feel great! Or more correctly, creating art makes me feel great.
Now, after reading this very interesting article, I have some of the scientific evidence to back up what my heart and mind already knew. Art is good for everyone, no matter whether you are the one making it or the one enjoying it.
The article stated, “Whether we’re making it or simply looking at it, art can transform our biology by rewiring our brains and triggering the release of neurochemicals, hormones, and endorphins.” It then went on to say that,
“One study showed that making art of any kind for just 45 minutes lowered the stress hormone cortisol by as much as 25 percent”. . . and that “art making builds our executive function and decision-making skills, and that just one art experience per month can extend our lives by 10 years.”
Like I said, this is all great news, but certainly not new news, at all. The science world is just catching up with us. Anyone who has experienced the joy of creativity in one form or another, or one who simply enjoys viewing the art created by someone else, knows firsthand that, “art makes us feel better.”
It just does.
